Running back Gus Edwards Gus Edwards made his much-anticipated return to the Los Angeles Chargers during Sunday’s 27-17 victory over the Tennessee Titans, Running back following over a month on injured reserve due to an ankle injury.
In his comeback, he showcased the skills that offensive coordinator Greg Roman recognized during their time together in Baltimore. While with the Ravens, Edwards and J.K. Dobbins formed a complementary backfield, with Dobbins offering speed and agility for outside runs, and Edwards providing power for direct, downhill runs. Before heading to injured reserve, Edwards faced challenges with the Chargers, averaging only 2.97 yards per carry and failing to score in his first four games. However, on Sunday, “Gus the Bus” delivered a solid performance, rushing for 55 yards on 10 carries.
His physical running style eased the pressure on an offensive line that has struggled, often being seen as a weak link in the Chargers’ offense. While Dobbins was held to 3.3 yards per carry, Edwards excelled against a Titans defense that features two-time All-Pro Jeffery Simmons. The Chargers accumulated 145 rushing yards against a team that had allowed just 113.4 yards per game, ranking 11th in the NFL in rushing defense. If Edwards can maintain this level of performance, the Chargers could revive the dynamic rushing attack that made Baltimore one of the best in NFL history. Additionally, Justin Herbert’s natural passing skills could provide the Chargers an edge that they didn’t have with rookie contract Lamar Jackson.
