BREAKING: Carolina Panthers set to sign another running back, adding to crowded room

The Carolina Panthers are expected to sign veteran running back Rashaad Penny, a former first-round draft pick, after rookie minicamp, according to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler. Penny played for the Philadelphia Eagles last season in a limited role and spent the previous five seasons with the Seattle Seahawks. His best season was in 2021, when he played under current Panthers offensive coordinator Brad Idzik and took 119 carries for 749 yards and six touchdowns.

Penny is expected to join a crowded running back room that includes Chuba Hubbard, Miles Sanders, Jonathon Brooks, and Raheem Blackshear. Hubbard earned the starting running back spot last year and is expected to be the starter again in 2024.

Sanders, a 1,000-yard running back from 2022, signed a four-year, $25 million deal before 2022 and is entering his final year under contract. Brooks was drafted by the Panthers in the second round of this year’s draft and is expected to be fully healthy by training camp after tearing his ACL. Blackshear was a reliable back in 2023 and one of the best kick returners in the league.

The Panthers’ running back room is already heavily invested, with three players from last year’s roster and one from this year’s draft. However, the team is still looking to add more depth to the position.
