Just In: Canadiens seek to bolster squad depth, as GM Kent Hughes is linked to electrifying players from the Hurricanes and Ducks

The Montreal Canadiens are actively seeking a scoring winger to bolster their roster for the 2024-25 season, and trade discussions may intensify in the days leading up to the NHL Draft.

Canadiens GM Kent Hughes is surveying the league and is willing to make a pre-Draft move that enhances his team, with a focus on improving the team’s offense this summer.

The team has been consistently associated with Carolina Hurricanes forward Martin Necas and Anaheim Ducks forward Trevor Zegras, and discussions involving both players are reportedly ongoing.

Necas is set to become a restricted free agent on July 1, while Zegras has two years remaining on his contract with an annual salary cap hit of $5.75 million.

It is believed that the asking price for both players is steep. TFP’s David Pagnotta reported that Carolina is seeking to orchestrate a ‘hockey trade’ involving Necas, exchanging established talent rather than future assets like draft picks and prospects.

Necas is reportedly seeking a new contract worth a minimum of $7 million per season and is eager for a change of scenery to maximize his potential with a new team.

The Montreal Canadiens, along with the Nashville Predators, Seattle Kraken, Boston Bruins, Philadelphia Flyers, and Buffalo Sabres, are reportedly displaying varying levels of interest in both players.
