BREAKING: Bruins getting three-time Stanley Cup winner back from LTIR

The Bruins’ Trade Deadline Activity and the Activation of Pat Maroon

During the trade deadline, the Boston Bruins remained relatively quiet, only making a couple of smaller moves. While Andrew Peeke has settled into a depth role, their other acquisition has yet to make an appearance. However, that is about to change as winger Pat Maroon is set to play against Pittsburgh on Saturday night after being activated off long-term injured reserve (LTIR), according to Fluto Shinzawa of The Athletic.

Boston acquired the 35-year-old forward from the Minnesota Wild, but at the time of the trade, Maroon had already been sidelined for over a month due to back surgery. Initially, the expected recovery time was four to six weeks, but it ended up being closer to nine weeks. Nonetheless, Maroon will have the opportunity to play in the Bruins’ final three games of the regular season, which should be sufficient to prepare him for the playoffs.

Before joining the Bruins, Maroon played in 49 games with the Wild, recording four goals, twelve assists, 71 hits, and 60 penalty minutes. These numbers are considered reasonable for a fourth-line player. Boston likely had an interest in Maroon not only for his on-ice contributions but also for his extensive postseason experience. Maroon ranks eighth among active NHL skaters with 150 playoff appearances, including winning three Stanley Cup titles between 2018-19 and 2020-21.

To formally activate Maroon, the Bruins needed to ensure they were cap-compliant. They achieved this by reassigning defenseman Mason Lohrei to AHL Providence on Friday, eliminating the need for further roster movement.
