Breaking: Bruce Bochy drops yet another exciting news for the Rangers
The Texans are bringing on Nick Caley as their new offensive coordinator, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero and Ian Rapoport.
Caley previously served as a long-time assistant in New England under Bill Belichick before joining Sean McVay’s staff in 2023 as the tight ends coach for the Rams. He took on the additional role of pass-game coordinator in 2024 and recently emerged as one of the most desirable candidates for offensive coordinator positions. He interviewed with the Buccaneers and was reportedly the Jets’ preferred choice but opted for the Texans instead.
In his new role in Houston, Caley will replace Bobby Slowik, who was let go following a disappointing season for the Texans’ offense. A major issue was Slowik’s pass protection strategy, which resulted in 54 sacks in 2024—ranking fifth in the NFL. Meanwhile, the Rams managed to allow only 31 sacks (the sixth-fewest), although both teams faced significant injuries to their offensive lines.
Caley’s appointment adds to the list of McVay’s former assistants taking on prominent coaching roles this offseason. His ties to the Texans are strong, dating back to his time with the Patriots and his college years at John Carroll University, as noted by Jordan Rodrigue of The Athletic. Notably, Texans general manager Nick Caserio is a John Carroll graduate who previously worked with Caley in New England.
C.J. Stroud’s emergence as a franchise quarterback has made the Texans’ OC position one of the most appealing in this hiring cycle, alongside young talents like Nico Collins and Tank Dell at wide receiver. Caley’s primary challenge will be to enhance an offensive line that struggled in 2024, apart from Pro Bowl left tackle Laremy Tunsil. The Texans are also hoping that Caley’s experience as a tight ends coach will help maximize Dalton Schultz’s potential after a disappointing first year in Houston.
The Texans conducted a comprehensive search for their new offensive coordinator, evaluating various internal candidates as well as top contenders from other NFL teams and college programs.
