BREAKING: Bills give Josh Allen some much-needed wide receiver help

For the Buffalo Bills to fully utilize Josh Allen’s talents, they must address the need for additional help at wide receiver, especially with Gabe Davis departing in free agency. The team took a significant step in this direction by reportedly reaching an agreement with free-agent wide receiver Curtis Samuel on Thursday night.

As per ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Samuel is set to sign a three-year contract worth $24 million. The former Ohio State receiver has played for the Washington Commanders over the past three seasons but has connections within the Buffalo organization. Samuel was initially drafted by the Carolina Panthers when the Bills’ current general manager, Brandon Beane, was in the front office. Additionally, Bills offensive coordinator Joe Brady briefly coached Samuel during his time with the Panthers.

Although Davis excelled as a deep-threat option for Allen, he lacked consistency and would frequently be ineffective on offense for prolonged periods. In contrast, Samuel, while not offering the same big-play potential as Davis, is a versatile and steady performer capable of contributing as a runner and receiver.

Samuel has accumulated at least 62 receptions in three of the last four seasons, with the 2021 season being an exception due to his limited five-game participation. He has also rushed for 715 yards and seven touchdowns throughout his career.

Even before Davis’ departure, the Bills required supplementary playmakers to support Allen. While Stefon Diggs serves as an excellent primary option, the team lacked depth beyond him.

With the addition of Samuel, the ongoing progress of Khalil Shakir, and the potential addition of a significant talent in the upcoming draft, the Bills aim to enhance an already potent offense.

The window of opportunity with a franchise quarterback’s prime years is limited before the championship aspirations diminish. The Bills are nearing this critical juncture with Allen and have yet to secure a Super Bowl victory. Bringing in more playmakers could bolster their chances of achieving that ultimate goal.
