By the end of the offseason, the Boston Red Sox will likely see some new players join the team, but could they also welcome back a familiar face? The Red Sox are in need of pitching, and a former All-Star from their ranks is currently available in free agency.
Nathan Eovaldi, a two-time All-Star, had a solid 3.80 ERA in 29 starts for the Texas Rangers in 2024. He has achieved All-Star status in two of the past four seasons and played a significant role in leading the Rangers to the World Series in 2023. Eovaldi is open to offers, with Spotrac predicting he could secure a two-year, $43 million contract. So far this offseason, Boston has been one of the most proactive teams, and FanSided’s Jacob Mountz has encouraged them to consider Eovaldi.
His 3.80 ERA and 166 strikeouts over 170.2 innings last season were respectable,” Mountz noted. “While this ERA may not meet the high expectations of Boston fans for a new starter, Eovaldi’s performance in 2024 surpassed all Red Sox starters except Tanner Houck. “Moreover, there’s a strong case for signing Eovaldi beyond just strengthening their struggling rotation.
He boasts an impressive 3.05 postseason ERA with 82 strikeouts in 79.2 innings. If the Red Sox are looking for postseason prowess, Eovaldi is hard to beat.” While the Red Sox urgently need to bring in a left-handed starter this offseason, Eovaldi does not fit that requirement. Nevertheless, he isn’t expected to be overly expensive compared to other recently signed starters. If Boston could acquire a player like Max Fried or Garrett Crochet alongside Eovaldi, it could be an ideal offseason in terms of pitching.
