With just one spot open on the team, the Boston Celtics may consider re-enlisting a well-known figure to boost their chances in the playoffs. Sports Illustrated’s Rob Greene proposed the idea of the Celtics bringing back Blake Griffin, a six-time NBA All-Star.
Greene highlighted Griffin’s strong relationship with both the players and staff of the Celtics as a key factor in a potential reunion.
“In his previous season with the Celtics, Griffin, who has visited the All-Star game six times, mentioned the mutual respect he and Stevens share, staying in touch over the years. Additionally, Griffin has formed close bonds with multiple members of the Celtics squad,” Greene outlined in a piece on February 1.
Greene then elaborated on the reasons why the Celtics might consider adding Blake Griffin, highlighting that his value goes beyond just his contributions on the court.
“With the Celtics aiming for a championship, Griffin would once again bring stability to the frontcourt, strengthening Boston’s interior presence and providing valuable mentorship. His addition would offer another solid option for the second unit, potentially enhancing what is already considered the deepest team in the NBA.
“With a single roster spot available and limited alternatives to fill it, reuniting with Griffin could potentially be the most advantageous move for the Celtics.”
Having earned six NBA All-Star selections during his tenure with the Los Angeles Clippers and Detroit Pistons, Griffin may not be the same player he once was, but he demonstrated his ability to provide quality frontcourt depth for the Celtics in the 2022-23 season.
Blake Griffin thoroughly enjoyed his time on the court in Boston
“Dude, Boston is incredible. Residing in Boston, competing in Boston was truly one of the most amazing experiences. Dude, the fans are exceptional. It’s remarkable to be part of a team that is so determined to win championships. One of the highlights is the camaraderie among the players on the team; they are a fantastic group of individuals.”
He expressed his deep admiration for Jayson Tatum while discussing the Boston Celtics.
“Someone like Jayson Tatum, a genuine superstar who remains humble. He engages with everyone on the team and staff, willing to have conversations with anyone. He doesn’t just stick with players like Marcus Smart or Jaylen Brown.”
During his time with the Celtics, Griffin reached the farthest point in the postseason he had ever achieved in his NBA career.
Celtics reportedly looking to strengthen their frontcourt depth
NBA Insider Marc Stein reported that the Celtics are on the lookout for additional frontcourt depth, whether or not they pursue Blake Griffin.
Stein mentioned in a February 1 article that Boston is exploring options to bolster their frontcourt but is reluctant to part ways with significant assets. The team may rely on trade exceptions to address their needs and is primarily considering players with minimal contracts, potentially receiving the veteran’s minimum.
While Stein did not mention specific names, players like Luke Kornet, Oshae Brissett, Dalano Banton, Svi Mykhailiuk, and Lamar Stevens could be suitable candidates. Although their options are limited, trading most of these players could create space for a possible return of Griffin.
