Sheldon Rankins made a significant impact by securing six sacks last season, with three of them notably against the Cincinnati Bengals. Those encounters are likely etched in the Bengals’ memory.
Now, Rankins will be focusing on challenging the Bengals’ offensive line only during practice sessions, as he is set to sign a lucrative two-year contract worth $26 million, according to NFL Media’s Mike Garafolo. Jeremy Fowler of ESPN was the first to hint at the forthcoming deal.
The #Bengals just now agreed to terms on a two-year, $26 million deal with DT Sheldon Rankins, sources say. Another nice payday for the former first-round pick, who heads to Cincinnati to join Lou Anarumo’s defense after recording six sacks last season for the #Texans. pic.twitter.com/wiZGVqAOAo

Rankins is a specialized defensive tackle known for his prowess in pass-rushing, typically lining up at the 3-technique position throughout his eight-year tenure. According to Pro Football Focus, his pass rush win rate of 14.6% was tied for ninth place among qualifying interior defensive linemen.
This indicates two key points: Firstly, his primary role is to excel at pressuring the quarterback rather than focusing on run defense. Secondly, his presence is not expected to impact the performance of Bengals’ nose tackle DJ Reader.
Malik Wright from The Wright Way Network reveals that the team is still keen on keeping DJ Reader, renowned for his effectiveness in stopping the run.
That is the hope was said to me many time recreate Hill and Larry O and have Reader as the anchor.
Rankins has no bearing the team wanting to have Reader back. https://t.co/NRDuFzs3Ow

Bringing Rankins into the defensive line mix creates a potent duo at the 3-technique spot alongside B.J. Hill. The tandem of Hill and Larry Ogunjobi at this position was instrumental in driving a successful Super Bowl campaign in 2021. The expectation is for this fresh pairing to replicate that success.
Stay tuned for further updates on this development…
