Former Cincinnati Bengals defensive end Jeff Gunter announced his retirement from the NFL on Saturday through a statement on social media.
In his Instagram post, Gunter clarified, “I wanted to address any misunderstandings since I hadn’t made a public announcement. I officially retired from the NFL earlier this week. I feel good, but I’ve lost the passion and desire to wear pads. I am grateful for all the support I’ve received during my career and hope to have that same support as I transition into the next chapter of my life.”
Gunter’s retirement is unexpected, especially considering he has only played two seasons in the league. The 25-year-old participated in just 10 games with the Bengals and spent the entire 2023 season on the practice squad. He recorded two solo tackles and half a sack in the preseason opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Drafted in the seventh round of the 2022 NFL Draft, Gunter played college football at Coastal Carolina and North Carolina State, earning First-Team All-Sun Belt honors twice. Although he was not anticipated to have a significant role this season, the Bengals are already facing depth challenges on their defensive line following the injury of Cameron Sample, who will miss the entire 2024 season due to a torn Achilles tendon.
