On Monday, the Bengals faced unwelcome news as franchise-tagged wide receiver Tee Higgins expressed his desire to be traded, as reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Despite uncertainty surrounding Higgins’ status with Cincinnati in 2024, the team is poised to enhance quarterback Joe Burrow’s options by adding a significant playmaker.
As per Schefter, the Bengals have reached an agreement on a one-year contract with former Patriots and Dolphins tight end Mike Gesicki, a 2018 second-round draft pick, valued at up to $3.25 million.
Standing at a towering 6 feet 6 inches and weighing 245 pounds, Gesicki is coming off a somewhat underwhelming season where he recorded 29 receptions for 244 yards and two touchdowns with the Patriots. However, just two seasons ago, he achieved a career-best 73 catches for 780 yards.
While Gesicki played second fiddle to Hunter Henry in New England, he is expected to take the lead role in Cincinnati unless significant investments are made elsewhere for the position. Another notable tight end who could vie with Gesicki for the Bengals’ starting spot is Georgia’s Brock Bowers, a potential target for Cincinnati at the 18th pick in the upcoming 2024 NFL Draft.
Despite Bowers being considered the top tight end by Pro Football Focus and the fifth-best prospect overall on their rankings, there’s a chance he may be selected before the Bengals get a chance to make their pick.
Regardless, the Bengals have now bolstered the tight end position ahead of the draft in April, addressing a glaring need after the group collectively managed just 686 yards and four touchdowns last season.
While fans eagerly await updates on the Higgins situation, the Bengals have taken steps to fortify Burrow’s offensive weapons for the 2024 season. The team appears primed with a talented roster set to contend for a Super Bowl run, although only time will reveal Higgins’ role within this promising group
