Baltimore Orioles Receive Another Set Back Following A Devastating Injury News
Former Baltimore Orioles pitcher Corbin Burnes will be sidelined for at least a year due to an elbow injury he sustained during his most recent start.
Arizona Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo announced to local media that Burnes is set to undergo Tommy John surgery next week on his throwing elbow.
Burnes signaled to a team trainer that he had seriously injured his elbow during his last appearance. Since then, he has consulted with two doctors about the injury.
After undergoing Tommy John surgery, it could take a minimum of a year before Burnes is able to pitch again, possibly extending to 2027 depending on the procedure. He concluded the season with a record of 3-2 and a 2.66 ERA.
Corbin Burnes’ Background with the Orioles
Baltimore acquired Burnes before the 2024 season, expecting him to be a potential ace. He certainly lived up to the expectations.
Burnes finished the season with a 15-9 record and a 2.92 ERA, playing a crucial role in helping Baltimore reach the playoffs for the second consecutive year. Despite a rotation plagued by injuries, he made every scheduled start, amassing 181 strikeouts and 48 walks over 194.1 innings.
He was honored as the American League starter for the All-Star Game and placed fifth in the AL Cy Young voting.
During the offseason, the Orioles showed interest in re-signing him as a free agent. However, he opted for a six-year, $ 210 million contract with the Diamondbacks, partly due to his home in Phoenix.
Burnes’ contract is fully guaranteed, securing him $ 35 million annually for six years. It includes a no-trade clause that is guaranteed for the first two years, and he also has an opt-out option after the 2026 season, which now seems unlikely to be exercised.
