Recently, Fredrik Olofsson, who was a regular fixture in the Colorado Avalanche lineup, playing 57 games primarily as the fourth-line center, experienced a shift in his situation just before the trade deadline. He was waived and subsequently reassigned to the AHL, where he has been playing for the majority of the past few weeks.
It appears that the 27-year-old forward is contemplating a return to Europe for the upcoming season. According to reports from Expressen, Olofsson, set to become an unrestricted free agent this summer, is considering a move to Switzerland to join EV Zug, unless he secures a one-way NHL contract. Negotiations between Olofsson and the team are reportedly advanced, with a one-way NHL deal being the only potential obstacle to his transfer as he does not currently have such an agreement with the Avalanche.
EV Zug, a playoff-caliber team in Switzerland currently ranked fourth, lacks significant NHL talent, making Olofsson a valuable potential addition. Former Avalanche signing Andreas Wingerli is also part of the EV Zug roster, having transitioned from the AHL a few years back.
Although Olofsson previously played in the Swedish Hockey League for IK Oskarshamn, his decision to potentially move to Switzerland may come as a surprise to some. Since joining the Eagles in the AHL, Olofsson has accumulated six points in eight games, showing promise. While a return to the NHL this season remains a possibility, the Avalanche’s recent acquisitions of Yakov Trenin and Casey Mittelstadt have bolstered their center depth.
Known for his amiable nature in the Avalanche locker room, Olofsson’s potential departure is met with well wishes. The situation will be monitored closely by CHN in the coming months as it continues to develop.
