Auburn WBB lands a brilliant star player

Johnnie Harris and the Auburn women’s basketball team are experiencing ongoing success in the transfer portal.

Just seven days after securing the commitment of ex-Arkansas guard Taliah Scott, Auburn secured their second transfer of the offseason when former Texas forward DeYona Gaston revealed her decision to join the Tigers in a post on Instagram on Sunday afternoon.

Gaston’s decision to commit to Auburn follows her final season at Texas, during which she played in 25 games, starting four, and averaging 8.4 points and 4.2 rebounds per game.

Despite often coming off the bench, Gaston’s impactful performances earned her the title of the Big 12’s Sixth Player of the Year for the season. Her contributions aided Texas in achieving an impressive 33-5 record, including securing a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament.

In the Elite Eight matchup against NC State, which Texas ultimately lost in an upset, Gaston started the game and contributed eight points, six rebounds, and a block in 28 minutes of play.

Considering that Harris was an assistant coach at Texas when Gaston enrolled as a freshman in 2020, it is probable that the two were acquainted prior to Gaston’s commitment to Auburn. This suggests that Harris may have been involved in recruiting Gaston even before her decision to join the Longhorns.

Hailing from Pearland, Texas, Gaston received a ranking as the 90th overall player in the class of 2020 by espnW, placing her as the 20th best player in the forward position.
