Jeff Schmedding, former Auburn DC, reportedly lands NFL job

Schmedding has been around the game of football since 2004, when he started his coaching career as a graduate assistant at his alma mater Eastern Washington. He has had many jobs throughout his career, including a 2 year stint at Auburn.

He was the linebackers coach for the Tigers in 2021, and was promoted to the defensive coordinator in 2022. He was in that position for one season, before heading to Washington State to be the defensive coordinator for 2 years before being fired in December.

On Friday, it was reported by Bruce Feldman that he would be headed to the NFL to be the ILB coach for the Denver Broncos.

SOURCES: Jeff Schmedding is expected to become the Denver Broncos ILBs coach. A former DC at WAZZU, Auburn and Boise State, he has helped developed some good defensive players. Last year was the first time WSU had three defensive guys picked in the same draft in almost 30 years.

In previous stops in his coaching career, he has been the inside linebackers coach at Boise State and Eastern Washington.

He was let go by the Cougars after the defense struggled to close the season, giving up 38 and 41 points in late season losses to New Mexico and Oregon State. Despite those struggles, he showed the ability to get some of those Cougars defensive players to the next level.

Last season was the first time that Washington State had 3 defensive players picked in the same draft in nearly 30 years.
