“The key to my success has always been surrounding myself with great people,” Pearl said. “I’ve known Matt since birth—his parents were friends of mine during my time as an assistant at Iowa. After his pro playing career, Matt’s first coaching job was right here at Auburn as a graduate assistant. He went on to thrive as an assistant coach and was even a serious candidate for the Iowa head coaching job last year. It’s exciting to welcome Matt and his family back to Auburn.
“It was essential for me to bring in someone who truly understands the complexities of Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL). I needed someone who could help us excel in NIL while also overseeing player development and roster management.”
Gatens was part of Auburn’s staff from 2016 to 2018. In his new role as general manager, he will handle roster evaluation and management, relationships with agents and donors, scouting, recruiting, and game preparation.
A former standout guard, Gatens played for the Iowa Hawkeyes from 2008 to 2012 and ranks among the school’s all-time scoring leaders. He most recently spent the past three seasons as an assistant coach at his alma mater.
