Andy Reid Receives Worrying $66 Million Update Amid Salary Cap Issues As Travis Kelce Retirement Rumors Swirl

The Chiefs just took an L in Super Bowl LIX, and now we are very well aware of what all happened as they suffered the heartbreaking loss. But, right now they’ve got another battle ahead—figuring out how to pay their stars without completely wrecking their salary cap. And just when things were already looking tight, Andy Reid now has a $66 million decision to make.

Trent McDuffie is about to get PAID. Spotrac projects the Chiefs will lock him in with a three-year, $66 million extension. He’s been rock-solid since getting drafted, and KC knows they can’t afford to lose him. He’s still got a guaranteed $2.6 million salary and a fifth-year option, but waiting to extend him will only make the price go up.

The problem? Andy Reid’s Chiefs are basically broke. Their cap liabilities are sitting at $274.7 million, leaving them with just $941K in cap space. Yeah… that’s not even enough to make a serious move in free agency.

Luckily, they’ve got a cheat code—Patrick Mahomes’ contract. Right now, his 2025 cap hit is a wild $66.258 million, but KC can work some financial magic by shifting about $48 million into future years. That would drop his cap hit to $28 million, giving them some much-needed breathing room.

Of course, this is just classic ‘kick the can down the road’ stuff. Eventually, the bill comes due, but as long as Mahomes is running the show, the Chiefs are gonna do whatever it takes to stay in the mix.

So yeah, KC’s front office has some cap wizardry to pull off, but if they play it right, they’ll be back in the title hunt next season—because you already know Mahomes isn’t going anywhere.

Is Travis Kelce retiring? Or is he running it back?

Travis Kelce isn’t in any rush to make a decision, but the clock is ticking. Is he done after one loss or is he coming back for one final ride? While the retirement rumors are flying, ESPN’s Adam Schefter says Kelce is leaning toward returning. He doesn’t think the star tight end wants to go out on an L. But with so many factors in play, nothing’s locked in yet.

One major factor? The bag. If Kelce decides to run it back, he’s looking at an $11.5M roster bonus plus his $17.5M total salary. But he’s only got until March 14 to decide. At 35, coming off his worst season in over a decade (823 yards, 3 TDs), he’s gotta ask himself if another year of NFL grind is worth it.

Then there’s the whole Hollywood, media, and Taylor Swift thing. Kelce’s bigger than football at this point, and Schefter even said that the right movie or TV deal could totally change his mind. If some media company throws a massive offer his way, who knows? He might swap the helmet for a full-time celeb life.
