It looks like the Chiefs are bringing in more reinforcements to stage a strong run to the Super Bowl this year. Now, they are looking at the possibility of adding retired free agent CB Steven Nelson to their ranks. Anyone who is a Chiefs supporter might know Nelson from his 4-year stint at the club. Picked by the Chiefs in their third round of the 2015 NFL draft, Nelson could be edging towards an infamous return to Kansas City.
After meeting with the Chiefs on Monday, Nelson may have done a number on their head coach, Andy Reid. He believes the 31-year-old could be a “welcomed addition” if required at all, “He was a good player when he was here. . . He developed into a starting corner in this league and had a nice career. We’ll just see how things work out and see where he’s at today. He’d be a welcomed addition if it all works out”
Well, Nelson had a strong defensive year last season with the Texans. That saw him allow only 45 catches on 74 targets for 711 yards. He had one TD, five interceptions, and 15 pass breakups to his name in Houston. And the Chiefs could hugely benefit from having someone like Nelson in their ranks. His opponent’s passer rating of 69.1 could prove to be handy for the Chiefs when aligned with a suitable receiver.
The Chiefs are facing significant challenges in handling press coverage this season. With defenders present on only 13% of their plays, they have the lowest rate in the league. In comparison, even the Jaguars, despite struggling at the bottom of their division, have a rate of 23%. Nelson, who recorded five interceptions last season, with four coming from off coverage, could be a strong fit for Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs if they choose to pursue him. However, opinions in Chiefs Kingdom about Nelson are less than favorable.
Chiefs Kingdom is not keen on bringing Steven Nelson back to the team. His departure from Kansas City to the Steelers was contentious, and he had a public altercation with some fans online, responding to a negative comment with, “I’m glad too never wanted to be there.” Despite this incident occurring back in 2019, fans still hold strong opinions against a potential reunion with Nelson, expressing their disapproval on social media. One fan on X wrote, “He’s awful lol,” while another described the 31-year-old as “cringe on so many levels.”
The negative feedback continued, with fans predicting that signing Nelson would worsen the team: “Making the Chiefs worse.” Some fans even criticized head coach Andy Reid for allegedly not exploring other options in the market, stating, “This better be BS… there has to be better options available.” Yet, it appears that the Chiefs are still considering this deal. While no agreements have been reached yet, Nelson’s potential addition is worth watching in the coming weeks, as he may help Mahomes make more clutch plays this season.
