According to NHL insider Elliotte Friedman, Anaheim Ducks goalie John Gibson is likely to be traded this season. Friedman shared this take on the latest edition of the 32 Thoughts Podcast. However, he would need to expand the list of teams he is willing to go to.
Gibson Expected to Be Traded
Friedman had a lot to say about a potential Gibson trade this season. He feels that as long as Gibson expands his list of teams he is willing to be traded to, he will be moved. He compared this situation to Cam Fowler. At first, Fowler didn’t want to be moved until he saw the writing on the wall. He then worked with the Ducks, was happy to go to St. Louis, and the deal was done.
Friedman said:
“I think this is the year that John Gibson goes. Now, I’ve heard Verbeek is asking a lot. He hasn’t bent, but look at all the goalies coming off the market now. I know Carolina is uppermost in his mind, and something that the Hurricanes have danced with from time to time.”
It was also mentioned that a team like the Philadelphia Flyers could be a potential landing spot, especially with their goaltending issues this season.
Gibson’s Days with the Ducks Are Likely Numbered
Regardless of the team that acquires him, it seems like Gibson is on his way out of Anaheim. The term on his contract is shorter; he has only two seasons left, which is easier for a team to take on. It is worth mentioning that Carolina may, in fact, be in on him. They have had their fair share of goaltending issues due to injuries. Depending on how long Frederik Andersen is out. The Hurricanes may try to acquire Gibson, which would appear to fulfill his wish.
Friedman also reported that a lot of teams are looking for goalies. He said in the previous episode of 32 Thoughts, that he believes every NHL team is realizing that they need three goalies to win in this league. So, whether it is Carolina, Philadelphia, or somewhere else, Gibson’s days in Anaheim appear to be coming to an end ahead of the 2025 NHL Trade Deadline.
