Alex Bregman Returning To Astros – Reports

Alex Bregman’s days with the Houston Astros might not be over after all. Bregman, who turned down a long-term contract offer from the Astros early this offseason, arguably is the top free agent left on the open market.

He reportedly has drawn significant interest from teams such as the Red Sox, Detroit Tigers and Seattle Mariners, with Boston widely considered the most likely destination.

However, during a recent interview with Houston’s KRIV-TV, Astros manager Joe Espada left the door open for Bregman to return. “Well, he has not signed with anyone,” Espada said. “Our arms are still open. The door’s still open. There’s always a chance, right? But right now, we are still in conversations with not only him, but with other free agent players, so we’ll see.”

Bregman, who’ll turn 31 in March, isn’t interested in signing a short-term deal, according to his agent, Scott Boras. Furthermore, it’s unclear whether he’d be interested in moving from third base to second base, something that might be a prerequisite for a deal with the Red Sox.

Bregman hit .260 with 26 homers and a .768 OPS in 145 games for the Astros last season. He also won his first American League Gold Glove Award at third base.
