Alabama A&M football player Medrick Burnett Jr. passed away on Tuesday following a head injury he sustained during a game four weeks earlier, according to officials at the HBCU. He was just 20 years old.
The redshirt freshman linebacker was injured on October 26 during the annual Magic City Classic, where his Bulldogs faced off against their traditional rival, Alabama State, representing the state’s most prominent HBCUs.
Burnett participated in seven games this season after transferring to Alabama A&M from Grambling.
“Today, our Bulldog family is heartbroken by the loss of Medrick Burnett Jr.,” said Alabama A&M Director of Athletics Paul Bryant in a statement. “Medrick was more than an exceptional athlete; he was a remarkable young man whose positive energy, leadership, and compassion left an indelible mark on everyone who knew him. While words cannot adequately express our grief, we are humbled by the strength of his family, who stood by his side throughout this unimaginable ordeal.”
