Fans of South Dakota athletics were shocked and saddened to learn of the sudden passing of Bridget (Arens) Schumacher, 30, at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton. Schumacher, a Crofton, Nebraska native, joined the Coyotes women’s basketball team in 2012 under Coach Amy Williams.

In high school, she averaged 16.1 points and seven rebounds as a junior and became a key player for the Coyotes. She was part of the 2016 USD team that won the Women’s National Invitation Tournament (WNIT) championship, defeating Florida Gulf Coast 71-65.

After graduating from USD, Schumacher joined Crofton Elementary School as a counselor in 2019. Survivors include her husband, Taylor, and their four young children. Read more about her impact at USD and in the region in next week’s Plain Talk.
