Malachi Moreno, the 6’11” talented center from Georgetown, Kentucky, showcased impressive skills during the Saturday morning session at the Team USA Men’s U18 National Team Training Camp. Despite catching the attention of many, Moreno unfortunately did not secure a spot on the final 12-man roster.
Moreno distinguished himself as a dominant presence in the paint, utilizing his athleticism, strength, and size, all while being observed by the new head coach of Kentucky, Mark Pope, and assistant Cody Fueger. In an exclusive interview with ZAGSBLOG, Moreno expressed his appreciation for the new coaching staff’s presence, considering it a significant gesture of commitment.
Having grown up following college basketball with a broader scope than just Kentucky, Moreno revealed his excitement about Coach Pope’s vision for the Wildcats, aiming for a ninth championship banner. Additionally, he mentioned a positive interaction with North Carolina’s head coach, Hubert Davis, expressing his admiration for the program and the atmosphere surrounding it.

Indiana, an early contender in Moreno’s recruitment journey, holds a special place for him, considering them as a prestigious program. Moreno identified a group of schools, including Kentucky, Indiana, Baylor, UNC, Ohio State, and Iowa, that are actively pursuing him. He already has plans to visit some of these schools later in the year.
Despite not making the final Team USA roster, Moreno highlighted the valuable experience gained during the selection process, emphasizing the unique opportunity for personal growth and skill development that such camps provide.
