One of the best assistant coaches in the NBA, David Adelman, is a contender for a head coaching job.
According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, the Cleveland Cavaliers have asked and been granted permission to interview with Adelman on their open head coaching position.
Adelman is the Denver Nuggets’ top assistant under head coach Michael Malone. The former standout student from Jesuit High School and the University of Portland is one of the applicants being considered to succeed J.B. Bickerstaff, who was let go last month.
Adelman is apparently a candidate for head coach of the Charlotte Hornets, who hired Charles Lee, and is already being considered for the head coach positions with the Los Angeles Lakers.
The 43-year-old Adelman is the son of Rick Adelman, the former head coach of the Trail Blazers who was elected into the Pro Basketball Hall of Fame. He has worked with Malone in Denver for the previous seven seasons as an assistant coach.
With center Nikola Jokic leading the Nuggets’ offense—who has earned the league’s Most Valuable Player award three times in the last four seasons—Adelman is one of the offense’s architects. This season, the Minnesota Timberwolves defeated the Nuggets in the Western Conference semifinals. The Nuggets won the NBA championship in 2023.
