Just In: Mitch Marner Changes Stance on Trade from Maple Leafs

During his discussion of the most recent rumors surrounding Toronto Maple Leafs forward Mitch Marner, NHL expert Frank Seravalli stated this week on the DFO Rundown podcast that a move is far more likely than not. Seravalli is so sure that a trade will occur that he is even willing to give a transaction a greater than 95% chance of success.

“It’s probably a five percent chance, maybe even less, that he’ll be a Leaf next season,” he said. This is an intriguing development, if only because the Leafs need to acquire Marner’s consent before making a trade, locate a team willing to give him a contract extension, and acquire the appropriate players to provide Toronto the best return possible.

This may take the entire summer, but as the NHL Draft approaches, there will undoubtedly be a great deal of conjecture about where he ends up.

Marner Doesn’t Oppose a Trade Out of Toronto

In an NHL Network interview, Steve Kouleas, host of the Power Play on SXM NHL Network Radio channel 91, stated that he has been informed that Marner is “not against a move.” According to insiders, Marner expressed his desire to sign a long-term contract. However, he also mentioned that there is a conversation going on in Toronto and that Marner is not entirely opposed to a trade. “There wasn’t a resounding no way!” He’s not declining. “I’m not sure where this is going,” he continued.

Marner is seeking a raise despite his good income. The likelihood of his succeeding in Toronto is low, particularly in light of the team’s recent public declaration that it’s time to shuffle the core. Despite a no-trade, Kouleas stated that the team will find a method to sell Marner if they truly want to. Marner would benefit from being more receptive to the process as a result.

Marner can go wherever he wants, get the deal he wants, and sign an eight-year extension if he actively participates in this and helps the Leafs get it done.

Because of their cap flexibility, Anaheim, Nashville, and San Jose are a few possible suitors.
