Virginia Tech Football’s Triumphant Spring Transfer Portal Haul
Just like the impressive results seen over the winter, Virginia Tech football coach Brent Pry has once again navigated the spring transfer portal with tremendous success. While there were certainly some needs to address, Pry’s ability to retain the vast majority of his roster, losing only a few depth pieces, allowed him to strategically add just a handful of key transfers to round out his squad. The departure of backup quarterback Dylan Wittke, who entered the portal shortly after the Hokies’ Spring Game, could have been a concern.

Virginia Tech’s Strategic Transfer Portal Acquisitions. In late April, Collin Schlee’s commitment to Virginia Tech filled a significant void, setting the stage for a competitive camp battle with Pop Watson for the backup quarterback position behind Kyron Drones. This battle is anticipated to be a highlight to watch during the summer, especially considering the pivotal role the QB2 position played last season when Drones stepped in for an injured Grant Wells in Week 2 against Purdue. During the winter portal, Coach Pry bolstered the defensive line by adding Aeneas Peebles from Duke, Kelvin Gilliam from Oklahoma, and Kemari Copeland from Iowa Western Community College, complementing returners Antwaun Powell-Ryland and Josh Fuga.
Pry further strengthened this unit by securing a commitment from Alabama transfer Khurtiss Perry, enhancing both talent and depth for defensive coordinator Chris Marve. Recently, Miami transfer Kaleb Spencer, a versatile linebacker/defensive back who primarily contributed on special teams for the Hurricanes last season, committed to Virginia Tech. Spencer’s arrival provides Marve with added flexibility in the secondary, alongside the team’s existing talent and promising young players.
With three years of eligibility remaining, Spencer’s role and impact in the 2024 season are yet to be fully revealed. Overall, Pry’s adept management of the transfer portal resulted in significant retention of key players and the addition of crucial depth pieces. Noteworthy commitments from players like Montavious Cunningham on the offensive line and Sam Brumfield at linebacker, secured during the winter, are expected to be valuable contributors. Despite differing opinions, Pry’s success in navigating the transfer portal once again highlights his ability to strengthen the team effectively.
