Celebrating a Decade of HBCU Marching Band Excellence: The 10th Anniversary of the HBCU Pepsi National Battle of the Bands

In a thrilling announcement made at NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas, on Thursday, Webber Marketing, in partnership with the Harris County – Houston Sports Authority and Lone Star Sports & Entertainment, unveiled the plans for the highly anticipated 10th Anniversary of the HBCU Pepsi National Battle of the Bands (NBOTB). This year’s event, themed “Celebrating Champions of Culture,” pays homage to the enduring legacy and influence of HBCU marching bands on music and culture.

The celebrations are set to commence in Houston, Texas, on Friday, August 23, and culminate on Sunday, August 25, at NRG Stadium with the much-awaited band showcase. Derek Webber, CEO of Webber Marketing and Executive Producer of National Battle of the Bands, expressed his excitement, stating, “Celebrating ten years of the National Battle of the Bands is a milestone that goes beyond music-it’s about the impact these bands have on their communities and the broader cultural landscape.”

The 2024 lineup features some of the most prestigious HBCU marching bands, including:

Bethune-Cookman University, Marching Wildcats
Jackson State University, The Sonic Boom of the South
Miles College, Purple Marching Machine
Prairie View A&M University, Marching Storm
Southern University, Human Jukebox
Tennessee State University, Aristocrat of Bands
Texas Southern University, “Ocean of Soul”
Tuskegee University, Marching Crimson Pipers

Adding to the excitement, Grammy Award-winning artist Lecrae will grace the stage with a live performance, blending inspirational music with the spirited performances of the HBCU bands. More artist performances are expected to be announced soon.

Tickets for the event will go on presale exclusively for past ticket purchasers and email subscribers starting May 16 and continuing through May 21. To gain presale access, fans are encouraged to join the NBOTB email database at www.nationalbattleofthebands.com. Public ticket sales will begin on May 22, with prices starting at $25. Tickets can be purchased on the event’s website or via Ticketmaster.

In a significant move in 2023, PepsiCo demonstrated its commitment to Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) by donating over $400,000 directly to impact marching band students and address on-campus food insecurity. Kent Montgomery, Senior Vice President of PepsiCo Industry Relations and Multicultural Development, expressed the company’s dedication to advancing HBCUs and their students through ongoing investments in initiatives like the National Battle of the Bands platform.

At a recent press conference, Montgomery highlighted PepsiCo’s plans to enhance community engagement and elevate the fan experience leading up to and during the upcoming event. The lineup of official events unveiled promises to enrich the overall experience for attendees:

National Battle of the Bands Band Camp
Scheduled from July 17-19, 2024, at HCC Northeast – North Forest Campus, this camp aims to prepare and inspire young musicians in anticipation of the main event, fostering talent and enthusiasm.

Emerging Experience Entrepreneur Conference

Presented by JP Morgan Chase on Friday, August 23, at The Deluxe Theatre, this conference offers a platform for entrepreneurs to connect, learn, and grow, promoting innovation and empowerment within the community.

Back on the Yard Kickoff & Stroll Off Competition

This year’s NBOTB event will introduce a new feature – the Hall of Fame program. Designed to honor individuals who have significantly contributed to the success and legacy of HBCU marching bands, this program recognizes the pivotal role these individuals have played in shaping the culture of HBCU marching bands. The inaugural members of the Hall of Fame will be inducted during the event in August, adding a special touch to the celebration.
