Skip Schumaker of the Miami Marlins came dangerously close to the same end that manager Aaron Boone of the New York Yankees met last month on Tuesday.
The Yankees’ April 22 game against the Oakland Athletics at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, New York, saw Boone dismissed. Because the Yankees skipper was booted out for anything a fan had said, the incident went viral.

During Tuesday’s Marlins vs. Detroit Tigers game at Comerica Park in Detroit, Mich., Schumaker briefly experienced Boone’s agony.
Schumaker scarcely said anything as home plate umpire Ben May appeared to dismiss him with two outs in the top of the second inning. Umpire Ben May, but he hardly spoke. Naturally upset, the Marlins manager made his case to May. Schumaker threw his arms around as though he were trying to blame someone else for what had been uttered.
In due course, May listened. The dismissal of Schumaker was overturned, and Luis Urueta, the bench coach, was sent out instead.
Urueta also had a protracted conversation with the umpires before exiting the dugout. Maybe Urueta was only the fall person to keep Schumaker from getting fired.
Maybe Marlins starting pitcher Ryan Weathers was inspired by the early expulsion. The left-hander drove a 1-0 Marlins victory over the Tigers by pitching eight scoreless innings and was flawless through five of them.
