The Las Vegas Raiders’ intention to select quarterback Michael Penix Jr. with the 13th pick in the 2024 NFL Draft remains uncertain, as the Atlanta Falcons surprised by choosing him at the 8th spot. This unexpected move came after the Raiders had invested $180 million in signing Kirk Cousins during free agency.
Given that Penix is already 24 years old, it wouldn’t be logical to keep him on the bench for the entirety of Cousins’ four-year contract. There are speculations that Penix’s tenure in Atlanta might be shorter than anticipated, possibly lasting just one season. In such a scenario, ESPN’s Bill Barnwell identified the Raiders, along with the Steelers and Titans, as potential suitors for Penix in the following offseason.
Barnwell highlighted that other teams like the Giants, Jets, Saints, Seahawks, and Dolphins could also be in the market for a veteran starting quarterback. If Cousins performs well in 2024 and a mutual split is desired, there could be a demand for him in the next season. In such a situation, Cousins might seek assurances from his new team not to immediately draft a quarterback after acquiring him.
Since the Raiders did not draft any quarterbacks, the need for the position is likely to persist unless Gardner Minshew or Aidan O’Connell make significant strides in their performance during the 2024 season.
Will Kirk Cousins Want out of Atlanta so Quickly?
Cousins is expected to maintain a positive demeanor this season, but it’s evident that he may not be entirely pleased with the Falcons’ decision to draft his potential successor instead of focusing on improving the team overall. While selecting a young talent like 21-year-old J.J. McCarthy could be justified as he has the luxury of time to develop before taking on the starting role, the situation is different with the older Penix, which could create some pressure for Cousins.
According to ESPN, there was discontent within Cousins’ camp regarding the lack of communication from the Falcons about drafting Penix, with his agent expressing frustration and bewilderment over the team’s approach. Given Cousins’ competitive nature and reluctance to serve as a backup, any indication of Penix potentially replacing him in the second year could prompt him to consider exploring alternative opportunities.
Is Kirk Cousins a Fit With Las Vegas Raiders?
As Kirk Cousins approaches his 37th birthday at the start of the 2025 season, there are concerns about his performance and durability, particularly after recovering from a torn Achilles injury. For the Las Vegas Raiders, acquiring Cousins may not be the most prudent move. Bringing him in would likely require a trade, and his hefty contract could be a significant financial burden for the team.
Given the Raiders’ preference for developing young talent at the quarterback position, it seems unlikely that they would pursue Cousins, even if he becomes available. The team did not show any interest in signing Cousins during the recent free agency period, and that stance is unlikely to change as he gets older and comes off a major injury. The Raiders appear to be focused on building around their current quarterback options and may not see Cousins as a viable solution for their long-term needs under center.
