McDavid’s blend of speed, creativity, and scoring touch has made him a must-watch talent, and a leading contender for the Hart Trophy once again.

A Thrilling Race to the Finish

As the NHL season reaches its climax, these three superstars will battle it out for the ultimate individual honor – the Hart Trophy. Fans and pundits alike will be on the edge of their seats, eagerly anticipating which player will be crowned the league’s most valuable player. The announcement of the winner is sure to be a highlight of the NHL’s end-of-season festivities, as the league celebrates the exceptional talents that have defined the 2023-24 campaign.

Nikita Kucherov topped the NHL scoring charts, setting a new record for the Tampa Bay Lightning with an impressive 144 points (44 goals, 100 assists) – the second-highest point total by any player in the last 28 years. He played a pivotal role in half of his team’s 288 goals, outscoring his closest teammate by 54 points. Notably, Kucherov became only the fifth player in NHL history, and the first winger, to achieve 100 assists in a single season.

Having previously won the award in 2019, he aims to join the elite group of active players with multiple Hart Trophy victories, alongside McDavid (3x), Ovechkin (3x), and Crosby (2x).Nathan MacKinnon secured the second spot in NHL scoring, setting a new record for the Colorado Avalanche with 140 points (51 goals, 89 assists). He made his mark on the scoresheet in a league-leading 69 games, including a remarkable 35-game point streak at Ball Arena. Despite this being his fourth nomination for the award, MacKinnon has yet to claim the MVP title. The only previous Avalanche players to be named league MVP are Peter Forsberg (2002-03) and Joe Sakic (2000-01).

Connor McDavid, the reigning Hart Trophy winner, concluded the season with an impressive 132 points (32 goals, 100 assists), placing him third in NHL scoring. This achievement marks his seventh 100-point season, making him the sixth player in NHL history to achieve this feat.
Moreover, McDavid became the first player to record back-to-back 130-point seasons since Mario Lemieux in 1991-92 and 1992-93.As a three-time Hart Trophy winner, McDavid is poised to join an elite group of players with at least four MVP awards, following in the footsteps of Wayne Gretzky (9x), Gordie Howe (6x), and Eddie Shore (4x). Additionally, if he wins again, McDavid would become the first player to win back-to-back Hart Trophies since Alex Ovechkin in 2007-08 and 2008-09.
The NHL introduced the Hart Memorial Trophy in 1960 as a successor to the original Hart Trophy, which had been retired to the Hockey Hall of Fame. Dr. David A. Hart, father of Cecil Hart, the former manager-coach of the Montreal Canadiens, donated the original Hart Trophy to the NHL in 1924.
