The New Orleans Saints have assembled a promising group of players in the 2024 Draft, with high hopes that this class could excel if a specific scenario unfolds. This scenario hinges on quarterback Spencer Rattler emerging as the cornerstone quarterback for the Saints. Despite being drafted in the fifth round, securing Rattler at this stage represents a remarkable steal in terms of value.
Although Rattler’s selection occurred in the fifth round, his talent level surpasses that of a typical fifth-round pick. While initial concerns regarding his character stemming from his high school days may have contributed to his draft position, it is widely acknowledged that the Saints struck gold by acquiring him so late in the draft.
According to the information provided, NFL reporter Jeremy Fowler shared some post-draft intel on the factors that contributed to quarterback Spencer Rattler’s slide in the 2024 NFL Draft. Fowler reported that the Atlanta Falcons and Denver Broncos were very high on Rattler, but they were able to select other quarterbacks, Michael Penix Jr. and Bo Nix, in the top 15 picks.
Interestingly, Fowler noted that some teams viewed Rattler and Nix as being in the same tier as prospects, despite Nix being drafted much earlier. This suggests that Rattler’s fall to the fifth round was not solely due to concerns about his talent or potential, but also a result of the quarterback needs of other teams being addressed earlier in the draft. The Saints were able to capitalize on this and secure Rattler as a potential long-term starter at a significant value in the fifth round.
Spencer Rattler could be the Big steal of the draft
Fowler also consulted with a separate source who minimized concerns regarding Spencer Rattler’s character. The source remarked, “Didn’t focus on it much – it wasn’t a major issue. He has shown significant growth since then, much like all of us. If my high school self had been in the spotlight, I wouldn’t have fared well either. His performance in interviews was impressive.
“In essence, the Saints appear to have acquired a poised and skilled quarterback at a remarkable draft value. While it is unlikely that Rattler will see immediate playing time as a rookie, given Derek Carr’s role as the starter in New Orleans, this period will afford Spencer Rattler the opportunity to develop and prepare for when his moment arrives.
