Southampton may swerve Burnley transfer return should Russell Martin triumph

Southampton were interested in Manuel Benson in January, but doubts linger about his ability to perform at the required level if Saints secure promotion to the Premier League.

After an impressive Championship campaign last season, Manuel Benson of Burnley has failed to reproduce his good form in the current Premier League season.

Due to his standout performances previously, Russell Martin’s Southampton side explored the option of bringing in the Belgian winger during the January transfer window.

However, despite reportedly having an offer accepted for Benson, which included a £1 million loan fee and covering his wages until the end of the season, the deal fell through, leaving Benson at Turf Moor, where he has continued to struggle in the latter part of the season.

Southampton will require higher-quality acquisitions than Manuel Benson if they achieve promotion.

Manuel Benson excelled for Burnley in the Championship and would have been a valuable addition for Southampton on loan in January. However, his performance has faltered in the Premier League.

Considering his struggles in the top flight, if Southampton secure promotion, they should look at alternative options.

The 26-year-old has had limited game time in the Premier League this season, featuring in only seven matches and starting just once. His total playing time amounts to only 91 minutes in the league.

Given his difficulties in adapting to the Premier League, it is evident that Benson, while proving himself as a strong player in the Championship, may not yet be suited for the demands of the Premier League.
