According to recent reports, Ipswich Town is aiming to finalize the acquisition of ex-Sheffield United and Everton midfielder John Lundstram during the upcoming summer transfer window.
In the Championship this season, Ipswich Town has been a pleasant surprise, leading the table with three matches left to play. However, Leicester City, trailing by just one point, still have a game in hand.
The youthful head coach has introduced an attractive style of play that has propelled them to become the highest-scoring team in the EFL Championship during the 2023/24 season, compensating for any defensive weaknesses displayed on the field.
While securing direct promotion is not guaranteed for Ipswich Town, McKenna’s team is set to encounter Hull City and Coventry City on the road before concluding their campaign at Portman Road against Huddersfield Town – a trio of potentially challenging matches ahead.
Nonetheless, the recruitment team is already planning for the upcoming summer transfer window to bolster the squad with fresh talent. One player rumored to be in talks with the club is Rangers midfielder Lundstram.
As per Turkish journalist Ezgi Alp, Trabzonspor’s interest in signing the former England U20s international has been put on hold as Ipswich has expressed interest in acquiring the 30-year-old, positioning themselves as the frontrunners for his signature.
With Lundstram’s contract set to expire in the summer, Alp reports that the midfielder is seeking a salary of £1.7 million, a demand that has also stalled any potential move to Trabzonspor in the upcoming months.
In the writer’s opinion, this could be a beneficial move for Ipswich Town regardless of whether they secure promotion to the Premier League. Lundstram brings a wealth of experience from his time in the top-flight, the Championship, and European competition with Rangers, which could prove invaluable for McKenna’s team.
Moreover, as the Liverpool-born player will be a free agent, Ipswich Town would only need to cover his wages of approximately £32,000 per week, making this a cost-effective and low-risk addition to the squad.
