The depth of talent in the New York Rangers prospect pool has diminished compared to the early stages of the rebuild initiated in 2018. This shift is mainly due to key players such as Alexis Lafreniere, Kaapo Kakko, Filip Chytil, K’Andre Miller, and Braden Schneider establishing themselves as regulars in the NHL. Nonetheless, this does not mean that the Rangers have exhausted their reserve of prospects.
In the summer of 2023, the Rangers drafted forward Gabe Perreault in the first round, 23rd overall. Following an impressive debut season where the 18-year-old recorded 60 points (19 goals, 41 assists) in 36 games and played a significant role in Team USA’s triumph at the World Juniors by contributing 10 points (3 goals, 7 assists) in seven tournament appearances, all eyes have been on his development.
If Gabe Perreault’s offensive performances aren’t the main focus of attention, then the spotlight turns to NHL-ready prospect Brennan Othmann. Currently, at 21 years old, Othmann is wrapping up his inaugural professional season with AHL’s Hartford Wolf Pack, boasting 46 points (19 goals, 27 assists) across 65 games. Before this, the winger showcased his scoring prowess in junior leagues. During his last OHL season playing for the Flint Firebirds and Peterborough Petes, Othmann accumulated 67 points (29 goals, 38 assists) in 56 games. He also led the Petes in postseason scoring, contributing 8 goals and 17 assists for a total of 25 points in 23 playoff matchups, ultimately securing the OHL Championship.
While other prospects are also gaining attention, the imposing forward Matt Rempe has won the admiration of the Rangers’ fans with his physical play and aggressive presence on the ice. This development is highly beneficial for the organization, as cultivating young, cost-controlled talent is essential for success in the NHL’s salary cap era. Therefore, the contributions of Bryce McConnell-Barker hold significant importance in the current context.
Bryce McConnell-Barker of the Rangers merits recognition.
The Rangers selected this promising center in the third round (97th overall) of the 2022 NHL Entry Draft. Describing himself as a two-way center, he has proven to be true to his own evaluation throughout his junior career with the OHL’s Soo Greyhounds.
At 19 years old, McConnell-Barker is currently in his third and final season of junior hockey, expected to transition to the Wolf Pack next season. Serving as the captain of the Greyhounds, he delivered a solid performance in the regular season, tallying 51 points (22 goals, 29 assists) in 52 games, and is now leading the team’s push in the playoffs.
In a recent game on Wednesday, with Soo trailing 2-1 in their second-round playoff series against the Saginaw Spirit, McConnell-Barker played a key role by scoring two goals and providing an assist in a 4-0 victory. This standout performance has elevated him to the top 10 in OHL playoff scoring, with 12 points (4 goals, 8 assists) in eight games.
Your top players need to perform at their best,” McConnell-Barker stated before the second round. “It’s crunch time now, and every game holds significant importance. I believe I thrive in high-pressure situations.”
McConnell-Barker’s confidence, standing tall at 6 feet 2 inches, is evident, and the team’s general manager Chris Drury, a former NHL captain, is undoubtedly pleased with his mindset.
In March of last year, the Rangers signed McConnell-Barker to a three-year entry-level contract worth $870,000 annually. Although he joined the Wolf Pack for their 2023 Calder Cup campaign, he did not see any game time.
Looking ahead to the 2024-25 season, that scenario won’t repeat itself. As one of the scarce center prospects in the Rangers’ development system, McConnell-Barker is likely to receive significant ice time in Hartford to hone his skills for a potential future in the NHL.
Currently, his primary goal is to secure an OHL championship similar to Othmann’s achievement in his final junior year. Moreover, McConnell-Barker is gladly shouldering the responsibility of leading his team towards that ultimate goal.
Our captain is showcasing exemplary leadership qualities,” remarked head coach John Dean. “He possesses a playing style that is defensive yet poses an offensive threat. Bryce is driven to achieve success not just for himself but also for his teammates.
