The possibility of the Rangers having Blake Wheeler in the playoffs seems unlikely.
Inquired about Wheeler, who sustained a leg injury ending his season on February 15, head coach Peter Laviolette mentioned that the 37-year-old forward has yet to return to skating.
Laviolette stated, “He’s making progress, but it’s slow.” He added this before the Rangers’ 4-2 loss to the Islanders at UBS Arena. Laviolette mentioned, “I catch glimpses of him. He’s still on a lengthy recovery journey. The team catches sight of him occasionally. When you’re in a situation like that, schedules don’t always align perfectly
“I saw him just before we came here [to Long Island]. Got to chat with him a little bit. It was good, good to see him. We miss him.”
Wheeler missed his 25th straight game Tuesday, which marked just under two months since the right wing fell awkwardly on his right leg in a game against the Canadiens.
