BREAKING: Colts Put on Notice After Division-Rival Texans Trade for $96 Million WR

The Houston Texans, a division rival of the Indianapolis Colts in the AFC South, made a significant move on April 2, signaling to the Colts that they are no longer just aiming to compete for the division title but rather for a championship.

The Texans acquired All-Pro wide receiver Stefon Diggs from the Buffalo Bills in exchange for a 2025 second-round pick, a 2024 sixth-round pick, and a 2025 fifth-round pick. This acquisition strengthens the Texans’ offense, which already boasts promising quarterback C.J. Stroud, 1,000-yard receiver Nico Collins, and other playmakers like Tank Dell, Dalton Schultz, and Joe Mixon.

The Texans’ young quarterback’s rookie contract has enabled them to add talent to their roster, whether on offense or defense. In contrast, the Colts’ most notable addition is backup quarterback Joe Flacco, while they have re-signed many of their own players and added a few depth pieces. This move by the Texans has undoubtedly raised the stakes in the AFC South.

The Indianapolis Colts must adopt a more assertive approach in the upcoming NFL Draft to match Houston’s aggressive offseason moves aimed at Super Bowl contention. Failing to enhance the talent surrounding second-year QB Anthony Richardson could jeopardize their chances of securing an AFC South title in the near future, making the 2024 NFL Draft a critical opportunity for them.Currently holding seven draft picks, with their first at the 15th overall selection, the Colts have the chance to capitalize on the depth and talent of this year’s receiver class.

Even if the top wide receivers are off the board by their initial pick, they could target a playmaker like LSU’s Brian Thomas Jr. or a tight end such as Brock Bowers on the first day of the draft. Alternatively, they could prioritize a top cornerback with their first-round pick and address the pass-catching position in the second round, where they hold the 46th overall selection.

Regardless of their strategy, it is imperative for the Colts to emerge from the draft with additional playmakers to support Richardson early in his NFL career and to keep pace with the formidable Texans offense. Presently, the Colts’ receiving corps includes Michael Pittman Jr., Alec Pierce, Josh Downs, and others, while their tight end group features Jelani Woods, Kylen Granson, and more. Strengthening these positions will be crucial for the Colts’ competitiveness moving forward.

The 2024 NFL Draft, featuring seven rounds, will be held from April 25 to April 27 in Detroit, Michigan, around Campus Martius Park and Hart Plaza
