A police investigation is underway following a car accident involving Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice on Saturday night, as reported by Calli Smith and R.J. Coyle of the Dallas Morning News.
The incident, described as a “major accident,” occurred at approximately 6:20 p.m. on a Dallas highway and involved a vehicle believed to be associated with Rice. According to Dallas police, the crash involved a Chevrolet Corvette and a Lamborghini speeding on the North Central Expressway, resulting in both drivers losing control and a high-speed collision when the Lamborghini struck a center median wall in a six-car accident.
The drivers of the Corvette and Lamborghini fled the scene without providing information. Rice is suspected to have been driving the Corvette. Two individuals involved in the crash sustained minor injuries and required hospitalization. While no arrests have been made, a police call sheet confirms that Rice is the subject of a search.
The 23-year-old, a second-round pick by the Chiefs in last year’s draft, was brought in to bolster the team’s wide receiver corps, which faced challenges during the previous season with drops affecting the Super Bowl champions. Additionally, the team dealt with issues such as Justyn Ross being placed on the commissioner’s exempt list and subsequently receiving a six-game suspension. Rice, an SMU alum, will need to address inquiries as he navigates his second NFL offseason.
Rice emerged as the most reliable wide receiver for the team, concluding his rookie season with 79 catches for 938 yards and seven touchdowns. His touchdown and yardage figures each stood as the second-best for a rookie in Chiefs history.
Despite the team’s struggles to elicit consistent performances from more seasoned wideouts during the previous season, the 6-foot-2 rookie, acquired after unsuccessful attempts to trade up for a receiver in the first round of last year’s draft, delivered. In the Chiefs’ wild-card victory over the Dolphins, Rice contributed with eight receptions for 130 yards, and he caught six passes in the team’s Super Bowl LVIII triumph.
He is anticipated to play a pivotal role in Kansas City’s 2024 receiving unit, alongside Marquise Brown and potentially another significant addition. However, the outcome of the ongoing investigation may place Rice at risk of facing an NFL suspension.
