Cincinnati Bengals’ high-ranking officials are holding off on starting negotiations until they witness the substantial contract details for Justin Jefferson in 2024
If you support the Cincinnati Bengals, I bet you, just like me, have been anxiously nail-biting throughout this season, pondering how the Tee Higgins contract saga will unfold. Given Higgins’ significant contribution to the team, his decision to stay or leave will greatly influence the team’s chances of being seen as a serious contender for the Super Bowl this season.
Many supporters had high hopes that the team would secure their tall 6’4″ receiver with a contract extension weeks earlier. However, after opting to franchise tag him, the situation took a turn for the worse. It began with Higgins asking for a trade on the initial day of free agency, followed by a string of unwise social media missteps by the prominent wide receiver, casting a shadow over his prospects in Cincinnati.
Unexpected Statement Issued by Vice President of the Cincinnati Bengals
In addition to the recent Higgins deal, a new worrisome situation has surfaced involving the wide receiver unit. This offseason marked the team’s first chance to discuss a contract extension with standout 2021 first-round pick Ja’Marr Chase. Chase has quickly risen to become one of the league’s premier receivers, so one might expect the team to be eager to secure his services for the long term.
One might assume that the Bengals would prioritize securing Ja’Marr Chase’s future. However, in reality, the team has deliberately avoided engaging in any contract talks with the talented LSU alum, citing strategic reasons. Bengals Executive Vice President Katie Blackburn, who is also the owner’s daughter, has defended the team’s approach despite concerns from fans.
“We haven’t initiated discussions yet,” Blackburn recently stated regarding Chase’s contract negotiations, as reported by the Cincinnati Enquirer. “The next step is to carefully consider various factors and give it some thought. While I cannot predict the outcome, we are committed to thoroughly evaluating the situation to achieve the best possible outcome for the team.”
It is widely speculated that Blackburn is intentionally delaying contract negotiations to gauge the market rates following the Minnesota Vikings’ anticipated extension for their star receiver, Justin Jefferson, considered one of the best in the NFL. Jefferson is poised to sign a groundbreaking contract to secure his future with the Vikings.
While this approach may appear strategic, it is actually a significant misstep by the Cincinnati ownership group. While both the team and Chase might be inclined towards a cautious approach, this decision is likely to benefit Chase significantly. History has shown that the second contract negotiated among top players tends to be more lucrative, indicating that waiting could work in Chase’s favor.
This implies that if, for instance, the Vikings finalize a deal with Jefferson worth 33.5 million per season. These players are competitive in their contract negotiations, and the second player typically benefits from the established precedent to negotiate for higher compensation from the team. Therefore, by waiting for Jefferson’s contract details to be confirmed, the team is essentially acknowledging that they will likely need to meet the increased demands of Chase’s subsequent contract.
While this strategy aligns perfectly with the cautious approach favored by the Cincinnati ownership group, it is highly probable that this decision will negatively impact the team’s negotiations with both Chase and Higgins in the future.
