Raiders pushed to Trade for Dynamic 25-Year-Old QB Despite FA Moves
The Las Vegas Raiders signed quarterback Gardner Minshew to a two-year, $25 million contract this offseason, but they may not be done adding to the position. Currently, Minshew and Aidan O’Connell are the only quarterbacks on the Raiders’ roster.
According to a report from The Athletic’s Vic Tafur on March 11, the Raiders explored a potential trade for Chicago Bears quarterback Justin Fields. The former first-round pick is expected to be traded this offseason, but the Bears’ asking price seems to be decreasing each day.
Despite signing Minshew, Fox Sports analysts Michael Irvin, Keyshawn Johnson and Skip Bayless all believe the Raiders should still pursue a trade for Fields.Irvin likes Fields’ talent and the extra dimension he would provide against AFC West rival Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs.
Johnson thinks Fields is better than any of the quarterback prospects in the 2024 NFL Draft. Bayless believes Fields fits the Raiders’ style of play under new head coach Antonio Pierce and would mesh well in their locker room.So while the Raiders added Minshew, the Justin Fields trade rumors persist as Las Vegas looks to solidify the quarterback position heading into the 2024 season. The Bears appear poised to draft a QB at #1 overall, making a Fields trade increasingly likely.
The market for trading Justin Fields has been extremely cold for the Chicago Bears. At this point, it is highly unlikely the team will receive much in return for him. The Dallas Cowboys only gave up a 4th-round pick to acquire Trey Lance during the season, despite Lance being drafted higher than Fields in 2021.
The Bears may be looking at only a 4th-round pick as compensation for Fields. It’s hard to imagine a team surrendering a 2nd-rounder for a quarterback that many teams don’t view as a capable starter. However, losing just a 4th-round pick for a potential impact quarterback like Fields wouldn’t be the end of the world.Though he struggles as a pocket passer, Fields has rushed for 2,220 yards in his three NFL seasons.
At worst, he could provide value as a dynamic runner. If the Raiders can’t land one of the top QBs in the draft and the asking price is low, taking a chance on Fields could be worthwhile.A potential issue for the Raiders is that they hired Luke Getsy, who was Fields’ offensive coordinator the last two seasons in Chicago. Fields’ lack of development was a major reason Getsy was fired by the Bears.
While Getsy has praised Fields, their offensive philosophies don’t seem compatible. So while the Bears added Gardner Minshew this offseason, the Justin Fields trade rumors persist as they look to solidify their QB position heading into 2024. But the Bears appear poised to draft a QB at #1 overall, making a Fields trade increasingly likely.
