TRADE DEADLINE: Edmonton Oilers acquire depth defenceman in Arizona Coyotes’

The Edmonton Oilers continued to enhance their roster leading up to the NHL trade deadline on Friday by acquiring defenseman Troy Stecher and a seventh-round draft pick in 2024 from the Arizona Coyotes in exchange for a fourth-round pick in 2027.

This transaction followed the Oilers’ recent acquisition of centers Adam Henrique and Sam Carrick from the Anaheim Ducks in a three-team trade involving Edmonton’s 2024 first-round draft pick just the day before.

Oilers’ general manager Ken Holland expressed intent to keep exploring trade opportunities until Friday, particularly seeking a veteran defenseman. He emphasized the importance of considering the cost involved due to their previous use of draft picks in recent years. While content with their existing defensive lineup, any potential addition would likely serve as a depth defenseman.

Troy Stecher, the newly acquired seventh defenseman, is a 29-year-old player from Richmond, B.C., with one goal and four assists in 47 games this season. Throughout his career spanning various teams like the Calgary Flames, Detroit Red Wings, Los Angeles Kings, and Vancouver Canucks, Stecher has accumulated 19 goals, 89 assists, and 217 penalty minutes in 487 games.

In contrast to the deal with the Ducks, where significant portions of Henrique’s and Carrick’s contracts were retained by Anaheim and the Tampa Bay Lightning, the Oilers will bear the full remaining $1.1 million cap hit associated with Stecher.
