As the Trade Deadline approaches within 72 hours, discussions are intensifying regarding prominent players on the market, including Ottawa Senators defenseman Jakob Chychrun. Despite being acquired by the Senators from the Coyotes on March 1st, 2023, Chychrun has been a constant subject of trade speculations throughout the season.
NHL insider Darren Dreger reports that the interest in Chychrun has increased as the availability of defensemen in the market has decreased rapidly. Recent movements of defensemen like Chris Tanev, Ilya Lyubushkin, and Kurtis MacDermid have spurred on some teams still in need of defensive reinforcement to aggressively pursue Chychrun.
Dreger suggests that the potential of two playoff runs with Chychrun could justify the asking price set by the Senators. Chychrun, who leads the Senators defensemen in points, is currently under a very favorable contract, costing only $4,600,000 against the salary cap until the 2024-25 season. Upon the expiration of his contract, he will become an unrestricted free agent.
This development showcases how swiftly dynamics can shift during the Trade Deadline period. On February 27th, Dreger expressed doubts on TSN 1200 radio in Ottawa about Chychrun being traded before the March 8th deadline. However, within a week, the situation has evolved, and the interest in the Senators defenseman is heating up. Despite dismissing trade rumors earlier in the season, Chychrun has consistently affirmed his dedication to the Senators.
Reportedly, five teams have shown interest in acquiring Jakob Chychrun, according to The Fourth Period. The Washington Capitals, Calgary Flames, Los Angeles Kings, St. Louis Blues, and Detroit Red Wings are all said to be monitoring the 25-year-old defenseman. Given the Ottawa Senators’ continued disappointment in meeting playoff expectations, there is speculation that General Manager Staios might consider trading a key player like Chychrun to bring about a shakeup within the team. With the Senators facing challenges, could another trade involving Chychrun be on the horizon?
