Rapid under pressure: Unexpected turn in Kader Keita case shakes the club

Rapid Bucharest midfielder Kader Keita has been placed under judicial control after being involved in a serious traffic accident on Tuesday morning in Sector 2. The court rejected the prosecutors’ request for preventive arrest after he had already been detained for 24 hours.

The District 2 Court announced on Wednesday that the preventive arrest requested by prosecutors would not be granted. Keita is under investigation for leaving the scene of an accident and potentially tampering with evidence, Agerpres reports.

The accident occurred on the morning of March 3, 2026, at approximately 05:46. According to the Prosecutor’s Office attached to the District 2 Court, Keita drove his vehicle without giving priority to a pedestrian, hitting a 67-year-old woman who was crossing legally on a marked crosswalk.

Surveillance footage shows the woman beginning to cross Gherghiței Street after a van passes, only to be struck head-on by Keita, who brakes too late. After the impact, the driver did not stop and left the scene.

The victim suffered severe injuries, estimated to require 130–150 days of medical care, and her life was put at risk. Emergency responders initially reported the woman as having fallen, but medical examination confirmed that her injuries were consistent with a traffic accident. The Road Brigade and the Police Bureau for Accidents with Unknown Authors later determined that the driver fled the scene.

Keita, 26, was taken into custody on Tuesday evening and presented to the court on Wednesday with a request for preventive arrest. The court instead placed him under judicial control, and the investigation remains ongoing.
