Detroit Red Wings coach Derek Lalonde expressed his thoughts regarding Lucas Raymond’s unsuccessful effort to clear the puck during their 5-4 overtime defeat to the Vancouver Canucks on Sunday. He emphasized that the problem wasn’t with the penalty kill itself, but rather a misstep by the 23-year-old winger. Lalonde mentioned (8:16):

“It wasn’t a (PK) structure (issue) today. It was a mis-clear, and Lucas Raymond is going to be an all-star type player. In this, he misses a clear. We will give him the message, but that’s just an execution, so we got two kills after that.”

“The frustration (with) the penalty kills is that it’s finding its way to sting us. And then today was 3v5, and we had an easy clear. We sort of killed the penalty. Then we lost a battle on a rebound.”

The Detroit Red Wings have had significant difficulties with their penalty kill this season. In the matchup against the Canucks, they faced a tough 5-on-3 power play that spanned from the first to the second period. During this time, Jake DeBrusk took advantage, scoring two goals in under 45 seconds, giving the Canucks a 2-1 lead. The Red Wings have allowed a league-high 24 goals on the penalty kill, with five occurring in their last two games. This loss marks the Red Wings’ second consecutive defeat, leaving them sixth in the Atlantic Division with 23 points after 24 games.
