L.A. Rams rookie running back Blake Corum was anticipated to team up with Kyren Williams to create a dynamic duo in 2024. However, any expectations for the former Michigan star have dissipated, largely due to the coaching staff’s failings. Despite Williams fumbling twice against the Eagles on Sunday, his position as the RB1 in L.A. remains secure.
Williams has a concerning fumbling issue, recording four fumbles in his last four games and a total of eight since last season. This trend is alarming and should raise questions about his future, prompting the Rams to reconsider offering him a significant contract extension this offseason.
Williams’ ball-handling issues and noticeable decline compared to his performance in 2023 make Corum’s limited role even more disappointing.
In his 11 games, Corum has only received 29 carries for 106 yards and no touchdowns, with his highest single-game carry total being eight during a blowout against the Cardinals. Since then, he’s managed at least five carries in two games against the Packers and Patriots.
It’s clear that his lack of usage is UNACCEPTABLE, and head coach Sean McVay, along with his offensive staff, must be held responsible. Why invest a third-round pick in a player who barely sees the field?
McVay’s unwillingness to increase Corum’s playing time represents a significant misstep. The coaching staff should be held to a higher standard for underutilizing a talented player fresh off a national championship run with the Wolverines. Although some might argue that Corum hasn’t demonstrated enough in his limited chances, it’s difficult to gauge his potential when he isn’t given more opportunities.
While I wouldn’t argue that Corum should take over as the lead back with Williams’ struggles, he certainly deserves more than the minimal touches he’s received this season. Unfortunately, it seems unlikely that his situation will change soon as the Rams aim for what could be a disappointing playoff push, making this an unnecessary waste of talent.
