The UConn basketball team faced a tough 99-97 overtime defeat against Memphis in their opening game of the Maui Invitational. While the loss caught many by surprise, head coach Dan Hurley recognized that this season would be different from last year, when the Huskies lost only three games and clinched their second consecutive national championship.
“We know that this is going to be a different type of season,” Hurley stated, as reported by Matt Norlander of CBS Sports. “This is not last year’s team. That was just a ridiculously dominant basketball team. It’s a team that will depend on the growth of Solo Ball, Jaylin Stewart, Liam McNeeley, Jayden Ross, and there are going to be games like this along the way.”
Despite UConn’s impressive record of 47-3 over their last 50 games, Hurley acknowledged that this squad would require more development compared to the previous two years. Last season, the Huskies encountered difficulties in January but managed to regroup and ultimately win their first national title. Hurley’s track record demonstrates his coaching staff’s ability to adapt and optimize their team’s performance, which may be vital this season.
The 2023-2024 team was previously dominant, narrowly losing to Kansas and experiencing uncharacteristically poor outings against Seton Hall and Creighton. Overall, UConn has shown exceptional strength, but this year’s team may take longer to reach full potential. Despite the frustrating loss, there is a wealth of young talent that has room for development throughout the season.
To enhance their performance following the setback against Memphis, the starting positions held by Aidan Mahaney and Samson Johnson may be reconsidered based on their early contributions. Experienced player Hassan Diarra could step into the lineup, and Tarris Reed Jr. has outperformed Johnson when coming off the bench. Such lineup changes could prove beneficial for UConn as they seek to build momentum for the remainder of the season.
