The New York Giants were reeling from a devastating overtime loss to the Carolina Panthers in Week 10. With a bye in Week 11, they had some additional time to regroup and prepare for a matchup against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who had only two more wins than the Giants.
However, after deciding to start second-year undrafted quarterback Tommy DeVito in place of Daniel Jones, the Giants faced their worst defeat of the season, losing 30-7.
Things worsened later that day when Saquon Barkley and the Philadelphia Eagles celebrated a significant 37-20 victory over the Los Angeles Rams. Barkley had a career-high 255 rushing yards, positioning him as a frontrunner for MVP and putting him on pace for a historic season.
This situation highlighted Coach Daboll’s struggle to maximize Barkley’s exceptional talent and was a tough realization for GM Joe Schoen, who had not seen the former Giants running back as a player worth a fair market contract. Meanwhile, the Eagles took full advantage of the Giants’ misjudgment, leaving the entire organization in a difficult position.
If the Giants struggle again on Thanksgiving, both Brian Daboll and Joe Schoen could face the threat of being fired
Many might be stunned to find that Brian Daboll and Joe Schoen are still at the helm of the New York Giants, especially after turning the team into one of the biggest jokes in the NFL. Following what was considered a flukey playoff appearance in their first season, the Giants have struggled with a 6-11 record, followed by a dismal 2-9 record this season, bringing their overall record to 17-27-1. This certainly isn’t the outcome that Giants owner John Mara had in mind when he appointed new leadership.
The pressure is clearly mounting on both the GM and head coach in New York. While Mara previously suggested he wouldn’t make any changes to his management team, that was before the Giants endured a six-game losing streak and recorded the worst offense in the league.
Now, some commentators, including Mike Florio from Pro Football Talk, are questioning what it would take for the Giants to overhaul their leadership once again. Florio even speculates on when the Giants might finally decide to move on from the Schoen/Daboll regime.
“The fact that the Giants play on Thursday makes it very hard to make a change this week. However, if the Giants fail to show up on Thursday against the Cowboys, Mara might have no choice but to alter his anticipation — either when the regular season ends or on Black Friday. However it plays out, G.M. Joe Schoen and coach Brian Daboll have to be wondering how things will play out. And whether one or both will be out based on how the team plays on Thursday in Dallas.”
While the Dallas Cowboys find themselves in a similar position as the Giants, with a 4-7 record, they managed to secure a win without their franchise quarterback on Sunday, defeating a Washington Commanders team that is in playoff contention.
Given this context, when Mike Florio speculates that another loss to the Cowboys this week could signal the end of the Giants’ current leadership, it carries significant weight. This is particularly true considering how rapidly the Giants’ season has unraveled.
