Breaking Now: NHL updates condition of referee injured in violent collision with player

An NHL referee is anticipated to make a full recovery after being involved in a serious collision with a player. According to a statement from the NHL, Mitch Dunning is fully alert and able to move all of his limbs following the frightening incident where Colorado defenseman Josh Manson hit him during Monday night’s game in Philadelphia. The NHL reported that Dunning was transported to a hospital as a precaution, but all neurological indicators are normal. Dunning remained on the ice for several minutes after the collision, resulting in a delay while trainers provided assistance.

“I had just returned to the bench when I looked out and saw Manson holding his face and the referee down on the ice,” remarked Colorado defenseman Cale Makar. “It’s never something you want to witness, especially in an accidental situation like that. It’s really tough. I hope he’s alright.

The Colorado team won the game against the Flyers, 3-2, with only one referee and three linesmen officiating. Dunning is a former professional hockey defenseman who spent parts of three seasons in the OHL. He later transitioned to officiating and became a full-time NHL referee in 2022, as reported by the Associated Press.
