South Dakota State volleyball clinched at least a share of the Summit League regular season title with a 3-0 sweep over North Dakota Saturday at the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center.
The Jackrabbits’ regular-season title is their first championship of any kind since winning the regular season and the postseason in 2007. SDSU improves to 25-1 on the year and 14-1 in the conference with one regular season match remaining.
Sylvie Zgonc posted a match-high 14 kills, 12 digs and two digs for the Jacks. Middles Madison Burr and Sydni Schetnan recorded massive hitting percentages – .600 and .538, respectively – while combining for 15 kills.
Camryn Honn and Rylee Martin combined to give out 35 assists. Honn also matched Zgonc’s 12 digs. Martin tallied four digs and had one ace serve, bringing her season total to 37 aces. That mark is a new single-season record for SDSU in the current scoring era.
Joslyn Richardson was also in double figures for digs, finishing with 10. Rachel Wieber posted nine digs and two ace serves, which came as the final two points of the match.
Lauren Perugini’s 11-kill, 11-dig double-double paced the Fighting Hawks in both categories. UND is 9-17 on the season and 2-13 in the Summit League.
SDSU outhit UND, .239 to .155. The Jackrabbits hit .469 in the second set with 18 kills. The Jacks also had the advantage in aces, 7-5, and kills, 47-36. The Hawks had an 8-7 advantage in blocks.
The Jacks led 24-21 in the opening set, then led the Hawks back in with a 4-0 run to set up set point. The Jacks responded with three of the next four to take the opener, 27-25. SDSU pulled away from the Hawks in the second set with a 6-1 stretch to lead 17-13. Zgonc had an ace and Katie Van Egdom tallied two kills in that run. Similarly, in set three, SDSU put together an 8-1 run to go up 18-13. Wieber ended the match with consecutive ace serves.
