One of the former Houston Astros pitching coaches has been hired by the Pittsburgh Pirates.
The coaching situation for the Houston Astros has remained relatively stable throughout their successful run. Despite the fallout from a cheating scandal that led to the suspension and eventual firing of their previous manager, the team’s decision to hire an experienced veteran helped restore order and maintain high levels of achievement.
Following the manager’s retirement, the Astros opted for an internal promotion, elevating their bench coach to the managerial role to ensure a smooth transition and continued success.
Whenever there is a change in leadership, adjustments are often made to align with the new coach’s vision. However, after a surprisingly lackluster offensive season last year, management has already instructed the current hitting coaches to implement changes ahead of 2025, with potential staff changes looming if improvements aren’t seen.
One figure that the team likely still misses is their former pitching coach, who served from 2014 to 2021. His contributions were vital in helping the Astros secure their first World Series title in 2017 and were instrumental during the team’s rebuilding phase. Under his guidance, the pitching staff’s performance varied from 25th in ERA in 2014 to first in 2018, showcasing significant development.
Although he hinted at retirement upon leaving Houston, he was quickly hired by the Arizona Diamondbacks, where he continued to influence the game, helping them reach the World Series in 2023. Following a disappointing season that led to his dismissal from Arizona, he has found a new opportunity.
Recently, it was reported that he will be joining the Pittsburgh Pirates as their assistant pitching coach. At 76 years old, he will be the oldest person to hold this position in Major League Baseball for the upcoming season, bringing a wealth of experience and knowledge to his new role. His name is Brent Strom.
