Duke men’s golf head coach Jamie Green has announced the signings of Charles Nelson and Alexander Weinberg from the Class of 2025.
Both players are ranked in the top 100 by Junior Golf Scoreboard (JGS) and will join the Blue Devils in the fall of 2025. “Charles and Alexander are both ideal fits for our men’s golf program and for Duke University,” said Green. “As cliché as it may sound, they are exceptionally well-rounded. They excel academically, not just due to their intelligence, but also because of their excellent decision-making, prioritization, and organizational skills. These qualities are what make them a great match for Duke.”
Weinberg, currently ranked No. 48 in the Class of 2025 by JGS, joins the Blue Devils with a scoring average of -4.87. Originally from Boca Raton, Fla., he attends Pine Crest School in Ft. Lauderdale and won the Class 1A Florida State High School Championship in 2023, followed by a fifth-place finish in the same event in November 2024. “Alexander has developed into a more dominant competitor, which we really appreciate,” Green noted. “His skills from tee to green and ability to make crucial putts, along with his commitment to strength training, nutrition, and overall health in the past 9-10 months, have prepared him well for college golf.” In 2024, Weinberg has achieved three top-five finishes, including a victory at the South Florida PGA Junior Tour event at Indian Spring, where he shot rounds of 3-under, 1-under, and 1-under to finish with a total of 5-under, 211. Recently, Weinberg was named an American Junior Golf Association (AJGA) Scholastic Junior All-American and is a Commended Student for the 2025 National Merit Scholarship. He co-founded Green Golf Impact, Inc., a charity he runs with his siblings, Jonathan and Stephanie, aimed at promoting sustainability in golf.
Nelson ranks 73rd by JGS for the Class of 2025 and 27th by AJGA, with a scoring average of -4.09. A North Carolina native now living in Dallas, Texas, he attends Highland Park High School. Nelson secured his first win of the 2024 season at the AJGA Mayakoba Invitational, a highly regarded event. After starting with a 4-over 75, he rebounded with a 1-under 70 and a bogey-free 6-under 65 to take the title. “Athletically, Charles possesses significant power, and I believe he has even more potential that will be evident over the next four years and beyond,” said Green. “He has demonstrated comfort ‘getting in the red’ on various types of courses. His game has also become more adaptable over the past year, leading to improved scores even when things aren’t going well.
Nelson also earned medalist honors at the 2023 AJGA Under Armour/Jordan Spieth Championship, having received a sponsor exemption for the event in his hometown. He shot 3-under in the first two rounds and finished with a stellar 6-under 65 in the final round to win. He was named a 2024 AJGA Junior All-America Honorable Mention and has received accolades off the course as well, including being recognized as an AJGA Leadership Links Member, an honoree of the National Honor Society, and a recipient of the Presidential Service Award.
